As we age, it is natural for a brain chemistry to change. This can cause some memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease. Though not everyone will experience memory loss, rates of Alzheimer’s cases are very high in the United States. According to the 2011 Alzheimer’s Association’s Annual Report, there is a new case of Alzheimer’s every seven seconds.

Here are ways to keep the brain fit:

Seek out and embrace new challenges – Shlomo Breznitz, Ph.D., founder of Cognifit and author of Maximum Brainpower: Challenging the Brain for Health and Wisdom, says to find ways to consistently engage the brain with new and stimulating experiences.

More confusion now may mean less confusion later – Sudoku and crosswords alone won’t work, he says. You’ve got to get creative when coming up with ways to stimulate the brain – switching up the things you do to engage your mental muscle can help maximize your mental fitness.

Challenge yourself: Work on your weaknesses, Take the road less traveled, Dominate your non-dominant hand, and Change your point of view.

Be a curious cat: Go back to school, Take a trip, Explore your strengths, and Get a hobby.
